Before I talk about the director's cut of Donnie Darko, which was released in 2004, I would like to touch on the topic of sequels. ``S. Darko'' (Japanese title: `` Donnie Darko 2 ''), starring Donnie's sister Samantha, was released in 2009. It was not released in theaters, but on DVD. It received poor reviews from critics and fans of the previous film were also disappointed.
