"Philosophy of Time Travel"

Now, "The Philosophy of Time Travel" is a book written by Roberta Sparrow, who once taught at the school Donnie and his friends attend. In the original version, the contents of the book were briefly mentioned in conversation, but in the Director's Cut, the text of the book appears frequently, inserted between scenes and overlapped with the footage.

It first appears in the middle of the film, after the sequence where the science teacher gives Donnie "The Philosophy of Time Travel". In "Chapter 1: Tangent Universe", which is shown in this insert, it is explained that a tangent universe is created when the four-dimensional structure of time collapses in a stable primary universe on rare occasions, that an unstable tangent universe only lasts for a few weeks, and that when a tangent universe collapses, a black hole is created inside the primary universe and all existence disappears. When a silver rabbit man named Frank tells Donnie, "There are 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds until the end of the world," he means that a tangent universe, which is supposed to occur very rarely, is created and will collapse in four weeks.

Next is "Chapter 2: Water and Metal," which is overlapped with an additional scene in which Donnie sits next to Gretchen in a classroom. It is explained that water and metal are the main elements of time travel, with water being a defensive element when creating a time portal connecting the main universe and the tangent universe, and metal being an element that constitutes time travel. At this stage, it is implied that Donnie's sneaking into the school late at night, breaking the water pipes to flood the school building, and then driving an axe into the bronze dog-faced statue in the schoolyard were necessary processes for time travel.

The next added scene is "Chapter 7: The Living Receiver" which overlaps with Donnie and Gretchen playing an arcade The Game. This refers to the people around the Living Receiver who assist them in returning the artifact to the main universe. The Living Receiver is someone close to them, and through their unreasonable behavior and violent acts, they unintentionally save themselves from annihilation. The Living Receiver is of course Donnie, and the artifact is the jet engine that fell on Donnie's house. This means that not only Donnie, who is guided by Frank, but also the people around him are being manipulated by the Great Being.

Next is the scene where Donnie and Gretchen visit Roberta Sparrow's house. After this, the text of "Chapter 4: Artifacts and the Living" is inserted, explaining that the artifacts are made of metal, that their appearance is the first sign of the tangential universe, and that the living will take great interest in them and retrieve them. The text here overlaps with the opening scene where the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) retrieves the jet engine that fell on Donnie's house. No further explanation is needed.

Next, Donnie spins a Rubik's Cube in bed, followed by "Chapter 6: The Living One Who Accepts a Mission." Here, it is explained that the Living One who accepts a mission is chosen to send the artifact back to the main universe, and is given the ability of the fourth dimension. It is also said that physical and mental strength is enhanced. It is this special strength that allows Donnie to drive an axe into the head of a bronze statue.

The story is finally coming to an end. In "Chapter 10: The Manipulated Dead", which is inserted after the movie theater scene, it is explained that people who have died in the tangent universe can Contact the living who have a mission through the fourth dimensional structure. In the movie theater, Frank removes his silver rabbit mask and reveals his true face with his right eye shot out. Yes, Frank is a manipulative dead man who goes back in time and guides Donnie.

A scene where Donnie's psychiatrist calls the Darko family's house during a Halloween party and leaves a Arrival on their answering machine. After this, "Chapter 9: Ensure Trap" is inserted. It's difficult to translate this phrase succinctly, but it means something like "a mechanism to ensure something happens." The dead who are controlled set the ensure trap, and the living who receive the mission must use it to return the artifact to the main universe and save the world.

After the jet engine crash scene is shown again, the final chapter, "Chapter 12: Dreams," is inserted. After the people who were manipulated in the tangent universe return to the main universe, they vaguely recall their experiences in the tangent universe in a dream. It is a "memory" of a "future experience" that does not actually happen. This text explains why self-help coach Jim Cunningham (Patrick Swayze) is crying and Frank is clutching his right eye in the impressive montage that follows, set to "Mad World."
