"The Sisters Brothers" synopsis

``We are Sister Brothers.'' There are brothers who are the most powerful killers, and everyone trembles when they hear these words. 1851, Oregon. The older brother's name is Eli (John C. Reilly), the younger brother is Charlie (Joaquin Phoenix), and his employer is an admiral who controls the area. Charlie, who has courage and has earned the admiral's trust, takes charge of the work as a leader, while his older brother takes care of his younger brother's personal affairs, even though he complains about his selfishness. Their new task is to eliminate a man named Worm (Riz Ahmed), who is being sought out by Morris (Jake Gyllenhaal), the liaison officer. We head south to San Francisco while rambling and talking nonsense. While the brothers were riding over the mountains, Morris found Worm a few miles south at Myrtle Creek. It was a gold rush, and Worm was among the miners swarming in search of gold.

Two days later, in the next town, Wolf Creek, Worm suddenly calls out to Morris and asks, ``Have we met before?'' He hastily replies, ``It's the wrong person.'' However, the friendly Warm compliments Morris on his carefree smile, so he changes his plan and invites him to lunch. The story goes well, and Morris ends up going to Jacksonville with Worm to pan for gold, and leaves a letter to the Sisters saying, ``I was in a hurry.'' During the journey, Worm suddenly reveals an incredible story to Morris. He claims to be a chemist who has discovered a chemical formula that creates a ``prophet drug'' that allows him to discern gold. However, upon arriving in Jacksonville, Warm, who was distrustful of Morris' movements, searched his bag, revealing Morris' true identity and purpose. Morris detains Worm, but is upset when he learns that his employer's goal is to steal the chemical formula and that he will be tortured by his brother until he tells him the formula.

The next morning, Morris chooses to run away with Worm, and the two depart together. Along the way, Worm speaks to Morris about his plan to end the barbaric world and create a utopia using the money he obtained. At first, Morris listens with some skepticism, but gradually becomes drawn into his story and falls in love with his ideas. Eventually, Morris decides to join Warm's dream, using his late father's inheritance as funds. The brothers, who believed in Morris and came to Mayfield, learned of Morris's betrayal for the first time when they heard that the powerful man who named the town after him had sent his men to steal Worm's chemical formula. Eli, longing for a normal life, proposes to take this opportunity to retire. However, this was out of the question for Charlie, who has ambitions to rise to the top in the underworld.

The brothers arrive in San Francisco and find out where the two are, but they are captured by the men who had predicted their pursuers. Eventually, Mayfield's men also appear, and the two have no choice but to repel them with the help of their brothers. At Warm's suggestion, the four of them team up to collect gold. At first, the two brothers are suspicious of each other, but just like Morris, the brothers are charmed by Warm's charisma, and a strange friendship and bond is born. However, when the "medicine" is finally poured into the river, each of their unexpected desires come to light, along with the gold.

Unique texture that does not fit into the framework of Western movies

There's no doubt that it's fun. But this movie is so strange. It's a western, but it's not. I thought it was suspense, but it smells like bromance. The photography techniques and cuts are a mixture of old and new, and the entire work shimmers like a haze. It is a profound work with a lot of personality, but at the same time it is elusive. What exactly is this unique texture? It's an ever-changing film that continues to defy the genre boundaries that we would expect.

Directed by Jacques Audiard, the master director of `` The World I Walk With '' (12) and ``The Battle of Deepan '' (2015), the film stars John C. Reilly, Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Riz Ahmed. This work we co-starred in. Originally, Reilly acquired the film rights and approached director Audiard.

Furthermore, ``Why Not Production'', which produced ` `I, Daniel Blake '' (16), `` You Were Never Really Here '' (17), etc., ` `Her '' (13), and `` Vice '' (18) Annapurna Pictures, which is known for `` ROMA'' won the Lion Prize and `` Her Majesty's Favorite '' won the Grand Jury Prize.) At the César Awards, France's Academy Awards, it won Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Art Design, and Best Sound (44th, 2019), and its quality as a movie is more than guaranteed.

The story is set in America, which is experiencing a gold rush. Elder brother Eli (Riley) and younger brother Charlie (Phoenix), who are feared as the "strongest killer brothers," pursue the scientist Worm (Ahmed) at the request of a powerful "admiral." However, things take an unexpected turn when their liaison officer, Morris (Gyllenhaal), betrays them and teams up with Worm...

One of the interesting aspects of this work is that the relationships between the four people change. At first, it was "Friends 3: Enemies 1", but due to Morris' betrayal, it changed to "Friends 2: Enemies 2", and when the four of them teamed up and started mining gold, it became "Friends 4: Enemies 0". It will continue to change. Furthermore, the moment someone is faced with gold, someone appears who takes an unexpected action, and the chaos accelerates. What will be the fate of the four?

...But if you take it at face value and expect a con The Game, you will be disappointed. Rather than enjoying the ``plot'' of changing relationships, this work has a structure that makes it more fitting to think about the ``deeper psychology'' of each of the four people that led to the changes in their relationships.

In other words, what I am trying to draw is a character, a ``human being'' itself from the beginning.
