“Walking” says it all

What's especially wonderful about "Lucky" is Stanton's "walking style."

Stanton often walks on deserted street corners and in the wilderness on his thin legs. His appearance is as divine as the tortoise's steps that appear frequently in the movie (Clint Eastwood is probably the only other person who can show such wonderful walking on screen).

When I think of walking in the wilderness, the first thing that comes to mind is Paris, Texas (1984), starring Stanton. That was also a walking movie. At the beginning of the movie, the main character, Vincent, emerges from the desert walking, exhausted and exhausted. He reunites with his own son, whom he once abandoned, and repairs their relationship by walking, and later reunites with his wife. However, Vincent leaves his wife and child behind and returns to wandering. A wounded heart that cannot be healed naturally prefers solitude and invites itself into the wilderness.

Stanton has this to say about the main character he plays in ``Paris, Texas.'' "That's me. That's me. I'm always playing myself. I try to bring out what's inside me. That's my acting. 'Paris, Texas.' ' Travis is also a man who is looking for himself. Maybe he doesn't know what that is."

The main character of ``Lucky'' could be seen as Vincent from ``Paris, Texas'' 30 years later. Lucky arrives in a desert town and asks himself how he should approach the end of his life. I wondered if my life had any meaning. ``Lucky'' provides a brilliant answer to the philosophical proposition that many previous works have tackled. After gently presenting the answer to the audience, he begins walking again into the empty desert. People have no choice but to walk as long as they live. Beyond that, there may be nothing but dry wasteland. However, there is no sense of mystery or sadness. Even if your life is like walking in the desert, depending on how you walk, you will eventually reach an Oasis. That's what Stanton's ``walking style'' says.

Text: Tetsuya Inagaki

TV director. My personal goal is to realize a documentary project that depicts the obsessions of manga and movie creators. Programs he has directed in the past include ``Gekiga The Godfather : The Man Who Revolutionized Manga'' (WOWOW) and ``Takeshi's Birth: Master of Oira and Asakusa'' (NHK). Currently, he is planning a documentary about a famous manga artist.
