The movie that gave rise to the term “gaslighting”

Telling lies and making others believe false information. Even if you think it can't be true at first, as you are told by someone you trust, you gradually become less confident in your own behavior and words. Victims then blindly believe that this is ``correct information'' and become even more dependent on the person who gives them that information. In recent years, this type of abusive behavior in which a person controls another person through brainwashing has been called ``gaslighting,'' and has often been depicted in psychological thrillers and suspense movies. The most common depiction is domestic violence (DV), where a man (husband) abuses a woman (wife).

Gaslighting is a term originally coined from a movie. `` Gaslight'' (1944) is a Hollywood film adaptation of the play by Patrick Hamilton (who also wrote the original story for Hitchcock's `` The Rope '' (1948)). As the movie became a huge hit, the form of abuse depicted in the movie eventually came to be known as ``gaslighting.''
