A technique created in Japan called “Ginzaku”

Michael Radford's attempt to make a movie out of Orwell's classic felt like a kind of necessity. This is because many scenes were filmed according to the dates written in Winston Smith's diary.

For example, the scene in the original story where Smith returns to his apartment and writes April 4, 1984 in his diary was actually filmed on April 4, 1984. The film was shot from April 1984 to June 1984, exactly in the era and setting Orwell imagined. If you look at the credits for this film, you'll see that it says, "This film was shot in and around London between April and June 1984."

Director Michael Radford and cinematographer Roger Deakins initially considered shooting the film in black and white, but Virgin Films, who financed the production, opposed this idea. As an alternative, directors are using a film processing technique called bleach bypass. This process creates a washed-out effect with low saturation, and although it is a color film, it succeeds in expressing the tones and bitterness of a monochrome film.

Silver leaves were first used in Japanese film director Kon Ichikawa's masterpiece `` Otou '' (1960). It is said that Kazuo Miyagawa, a cameraman at Daiei Pictures, created this technique for Ichikawa's films, and today it is used in films such as `` Seven '' (1995), `` Saving Private Ryan '' (1998), and `` The matrix '' (1999). ), it is often used in famous American movies. The futuristic world of 1984, ravaged by nuclear war, is terrifyingly cold, thanks in part to the silver residue, and served as an excellent approach to recreating Orwell's fictional vision.
