Unusual reaction at an overseas film festival where leaving the theater midway through is common practice
At the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, there were a number of people leaving the theater midway through the preview screening for the press, which was packed to capacity. At the Venice International Film Festival, which preceded the film in Toronto, there were similar walk-outs, but the film received an overwhelming ovation the moment the screening ended. ``The Painted Bird'' is said to be the most controversial work of the past few years, with its ambivalent feeling of ``making you want to get out of your seat'' and ``being extremely moved once you watch the whole thing.''
It is not uncommon to see people leaving the theater midway through film festivals overseas, especially screenings for the press. Especially at film festivals like Toronto, where there are a large number of screenings, there is a tendency to decide that there is no point in watching any more films and move to another screening to find a better film. However, in the case of ``The Painted Bird,'' it was easy to know when to leave. Over the course of 2 hours and 49 minutes, there are many depictions that make you want to turn away, and each time someone can't stand it anymore and stands up.
The depictions in ``The Painted Bird'' are truly diverse and make you want to turn away. Therefore, even if you can manage to continue watching one scene, other scenes will be beyond your tolerance level.
“The Painted Bird” preview
The main photograph used in the work is a composition of a boy buried up to his neck in soil and a crow in front of him. I can't help but imagine what horrible things will happen after this. When you watch the main story, you will see a shocking situation that goes beyond your imagination. It's truly a fear you can't escape from.
There are also all kinds of eye-opening descriptions such as ``The pain is felt in a realistic manner,'' ``Is it morally acceptable to go this far?'' ``Human's terrifying instincts,'' and ``vivid depictions of war.'' However, it is piled up with vivid performances.
A shocking depiction that is different from Haneke and Trier.
