The horrifying reality of national corruption exposed by a huge fire

On October 30, 2015, a huge fire broke out at the live music venue "Collective" in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, when fireworks used in the performance spread to the surrounding area, killing 27 people and injuring 180 others. Furthermore, over the next several months, many of the fire-injured victims admitted to multiple hospitals died one after another. The final death toll rose to 64. Why on earth did that happen?

The documentary film Collective(2019) thoroughly delves into this question. Romanian director Alexander Nanau, who also produces and shoots the film, sets up his camera in the office of the newspaper company that started the investigation. As the editorial team follows the process of uncovering the facts, it exposes the dirty constitution that is eroding Romania as a whole. The list of shocking facts sounds like a thrilling social drama, but they are all reality.

"Collective" preview

Catalin Torontan, editor-in-chief of the long-established sports newspaper Gazeta Sporturilor, receives information that the concentration of disinfectants used in public hospitals is being deliberately diluted. Furthermore, it was revealed one after another that pharmaceutical companies had falsified concentration labels and that the government had neglected to test their products. After being taken to the hospital, the victims of the fire lost their precious lives not from burns but from infections.

The Minister of Health (Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare in Japan) responds to media requests for verification of the facts, saying that the concentration of disinfectant was 95%, which was appropriate. However, it was discovered that the government had overlooked the fact that a number of deaths had been caused by bacterial infections caused by diluted disinfectants, and ``Gazeta'' newspaper published this fact. This sparked massive protests and the Minister of Health simply resigned. Then, as an investigation into pharmaceutical company CEO Dan Condria begins, the government holds a press conference and finally admits the truth. It was soon after that that Condria mysteriously died in a car accident.
