From Korea to Hollywood, the work of cinematographer Jeong Jeong-hoon

The cinematographer for "Oldboy" was Jung Jung-hun, who was working with Park Chan -wook for the first time. This marked the start of a collaboration of over 10 years, including " Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" (2005), "It's Okay to Be a Cyborg " (2006), " Thirst " (2009), " The Handmaiden " (2016).

The previously mentioned use of telephoto and wide-angle lenses was apparently Jonghun's idea, but Chan-wook requested, "I want the camera to keep rolling at all times. Keep the saturation low and add some movement to the screen." Jonghun followed this order and shot each shot more than 10 times, taking a total of 900 shots.

Jung-hun did the work on not only the long, one-shot action scene in which Oh Dae-su fights alone against dozens of thugs, but also the famous shot of Dae-su raising a hammer at a young thug. Chan-wook praised the former as "like a medieval Renaissance or a Diego Velazquez painting," and on the latter, he even said, "The image was so cool that I drew a dotted line and added a joke." Jung-hun was still new to the industry at the time, but his talent is clearly apparent in the imagery.

Since the mid-2010s, Jung-hoon has been active in Hollywood, working as a cinematographer on Edgar Wright's " Last Night in Soho " (21) and " Uncharted " (22), as well as " Edison's The Game " (19) and "IT" (17). He has also been cast in the Star Wars drama series " Obi-Wan Kenobi " (22), and is already establishing himself as an indispensable filmmaker in Hollywood.

Chan-wook's new film "Decision to Leave," his first since " The Handmaiden ," is scheduled for release in 2022, but Jung-hoon is not involved in this work, and the new cinematographer has been Kim Ji-young, who worked on " A Bittersweet Life " (2005) and "Dog-ni : The Indictment of a Child " (2011). Kim Ji-young has served as cinematographer on " Swing Kids " (2018) and " Paektu Mountain " (2019), and was the camera operator on " Okja" (2017) and " Parasite " (2019), and expectations are high for this collaboration.
