``Narc'' Tom Cruise also fell in love! A masterpiece of social suspense
2022.07.20
Director Jack Reacher continues filming
After the success of this film, Carnahan was recognized by Tom Cruise for his talent and was selected to direct the new Mission: Impossible series , Mission: Impossible 3 (2006). His future looked bright. However, Carnahan, who would not compromise on his vision, had a difference of opinion with Cruise and ended up dropping out of the film. As a replacement, J.J. Abrams, who was even less well known than Carnahan at the time, took over as director and, as you know, made a spectacular breakthrough.
Carnahan has continued to go his own way since then, delivering one hard-hitting action drama after another. In " Smokin' Aces " (2006), he depicted a battle royale between assassins with exquisite situations and humor, and this touch is carried over to his latest work, " Death Police ." In " The Grey " (2011), he emotionally depicted the desperate survival of men abandoned in a vast snowy field, wowing action fans. These are not the so-called flashy action of today. Rather, they are powerful works that are closer to the entertainment of the 1970s, where the drama is driven by the judgment and instantaneous reflexes of characters placed in extreme situations.

Finally, I would like to introduce an interview with director William Friedkin, director of The French Connection and The Exorcist (1973), included on the DVD of Narc . " Narc is a work that will remain in the future," this master director asserts. In his eyes, this work also has a powerful Arrival that is similar to The The French Connection . However, it is difficult for a serious work that was well received in the 1970s to appeal widely to modern audiences. Friedkin also says, " Narc is going against the times." It is clear from his subsequent filmography that Carnahan does not pander to the times. He finds interest in settings and characters and spins solid dramas. This attitude, or more specifically, his auteurism, is unlikely to change in the future.
