David Lowery shot his first video film, Poltergeist, when he was seven years old. The image of a ghost covered in a sheet in his masterpiece A GHOST STORY (2017) was probably summoned from the memory of this short film he shot as a boy. As in A GHOST STORY , David Lowery again portrays a protagonist stranded in time and space in The Green Knight.

On his way to the green chapel, Gawain is left behind by the stories people tell him and is completely lost. There is a suggestive scene where Gawain, on horseback, gets lost at a crossroads, where a skeleton locked in a cage hangs (a homage to Willow (1988)). The spiritual and fairy-like people he encounters on the way to the chapel, the amber light, the falling dust and thick fog, and the meditative camerawork all highlight Gawain as a lost boy, not the hero of a legend. Gawain's imposing portrait rather strips him of his true self. The portrait is not a mirror for Gawain. Gawain's real image and outline are so weak that they seem to disappear into the scenery.

This film has images and sounds like a horror movie. As mentioned in an interview, Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula (1992) was a major source of inspiration. The scene where Gawain, who has had everything stolen from him by thieves, meets St. Winifred (Erin Kellyman) in an abandoned villa was filmed as a homage to Dracula . This scene, shot with minimal light, makes not only Gawain's vision but also the audience's vision unstable. The mysterious beauty of Winifred's white dress that stands out against the pitch black screen. And the powerful line that Winifred says to Gawain, "Don't touch me." This line has two meanings: it is a Arrival that a knight should treat women like a gentleman, and it also expresses her existence as a ghost.

The women Gawain meets, including Ethel, want to help him. But Gawain, who wants to become a legendary knight, fails to learn from their advice. At the same time, Gawain knows that he is not worthy of the legend. The code of conduct for a knight is outside of him. Gawain is torn between being good and being great, and is lost.
