That genius was supposed to be the director!?
In the first place, a movie adaptation of Blade has been considered since the 1970s, when the original comic was created, but it never came to fruition. In the early 1990s, an attempt was made to make a film starring rapper LL Cool J, but that attempt also fell through. The project began to move forward in earnest after New Line Cinema acquired the production rights, but there was a lot of confusion in the early days, including attempts to cast Blade as a different white character than in the original story. However, with the appointment of David S. Goyer as the scriptwriter, the direction of the film was gradually determined.
Goyer will begin drafting the script with David Fincher, who has just finished filming Seven (1995). Their goal was to completely eliminate the mystique of traditional vampire movies and create a modern story. The religious aspect of being weak against the cross is also unnecessary here. We attempted to create a new vampire movie by leaving behind the vampire's weakness of sunlight and his habit of obtaining sustenance through blood-sucking, and dropping his existence into the darkness of a modern metropolis.

According to Goyer, Fincher wanted to give Blade's character a Buddha-like story of enlightenment. This is a drama about a person who experiences bereavement one after another, overcomes them, and achieves spiritual freedom. In the end, Fincher's intentions were not 100% reflected, but the changes when comparing the opening Blade and the ending Blade are reminiscent of that. Incidentally, Fincher initially expressed interest in directing the film, but due to commitments to other projects, he was unable to do so.
Taking his place as director is Stephen Norrington, a British talent who has built up a career in the special effects field and made his directorial debut with `` Death Machine '' (1994). After reading the script, he sensed the potential for a new vampire movie, so he moved to the United States and began working hard on this project. What particularly moved him was the relationship between Blade and Whistler. Norrington says that the film's composition, in which a young gunman inherits the baton from an old gunman, reminded him of a classic Western movie like ` `Western '' (1968).
