Understanding the relationship between “White Trash” and movies from the bestseller
In 2016, the book `` Hillbilly Elegy: White People Left Behind from America's Prosperity '' (translator: Mitsuhiro Sekine/Kobunsha) was a huge bestseller in the United States. This book depicts the real lives of low-income white people known as hillbillies living in the Appalachian Mountains of the southeastern United States, and has a great impact on readers. The author, J.D. Vance, was born into a poor family in Kentucky, and writes about his real-life experiences there like a novel. Her mother, who divorced her father at an early age, is addicted to alcohol and drugs, and has had many boyfriends. His emotional support is his strong-faced grandmother who always carries a .38 caliber gun and intimidates those around her. This grandmother taught Vance the importance of studying, and he entered Harvard Law School. Escape from the negative spiral of a poor family.

The family environment depicted in this book is very similar to the setting of ``Patti Cake$''. Patty's mother is also divorced, and she drinks with him every night at the bar and has a relationship with a crazy man. Patty's mother laughs at Patty's obsession with rapping, but her grandmother, who lives with her, recognizes Patty's talent and encourages her. In other words, ``Patti Cake$'' depicts a typical ``White Trash'' family, but the most impressive thing it has in common with ``Hillbilly Elegy'' is the relationship between the families. They prioritize protecting their family and honor, and are willing to point a gun at anyone who insults their family. However, paradoxically, violence is often used even within such families. The author, Vance, was also often assaulted by his mother when he was a boy. What's more, my mother is even asked to give me her own urine so that she doesn't fail a drug test. However, he does not abandon his relationship with his mother and tries to maintain their family ties.
The theme of ``Patti Cake$'' is exactly that. Patti tries to rebuild her broken relationship with her mother through rapping. It is also a process of exploring the fundamental nature of communication between people, and is a major theme that the ``White Trash'' films have always depicted.
