A hidden popular work, miraculously shown in theaters

In recent years, more and more old movies have been screened in Japanese theaters, but among the old movies released in 2022, two unreleased movies directed by Jonathan Demme were particularly surprising. A film festival entitled ``Almost'' a selection of masterpieces of American films from the 1970s and 1980s was held at the Shimo-Takaido Cinema, and ``Melvin and Howard'' from 1980 and ``The Married to the Mob.. I was surprised when I went to the theater to watch two films that were (or should have been) relatively unknown! Both screenings were nearly full. This may be due to the small number of screenings, but it is still an unexpectedly popular movie. At that time, it had been a cold day, but the inside of the theater was warm and warm! As the author of Demi's private fan club, I was filled with emotion and excitement as I stared at the screen.

In fact, ``Melvin and Howard'' was shown at the Athénée Français with commentary by Masaya Nakahara, and ``Married to the Mob'' was shown at a movie theater in Kyoto in 2021. Touch! It was screened for the first time in Japan at the Masterpiece Movie Viewing Party. However, this is the first time that either of these will be screened at a general theater in Tokyo. More than 30 to 40 years have passed since their first release in the United States, but these two movies have erupted into Setagaya Ward like hot springs full of energy!

“Married to the Mob” trailer

According to what I heard from the organizer, there are secretly passionate fans of ``Married to the Mob,'' and even when it was screened in Kyoto, there were audience members who took time off from work to come from Tokyo. It is said that there were also When I heard this story, I felt strange. There was talk of this movie being released in theaters in Japan in the 1980s, and a commercial preview was only held once (this is where I first encountered it). I wrote a column called ``Stop the Okra'' in the now-defunct town magazine ``City Road'' and called for its release, but in the end only the video was released. However, over the years, it seems to have grown into a work that has gained a loyal following, albeit a small number. If it had been shown in theaters in the 1980s, it might have become a forgotten movie now, but by showing it through video, it probably became a work of art.

It's not a masterpiece that will go down in film history, but it's definitely a heart-pounding comedy, and I can't help but love it every time I watch it. The cast, including Michelle Pfeiffer, are brilliant, the music is light, and above all, you can tell that the director was having fun making this movie. While it is Hollywood-style entertainment, it also contains off-beat secret ingredients that will tickle the hearts of enthusiasts. In recent years, I feel like there have been fewer and fewer high-quality entertaining films in Hollywood that can be easily watched like this. Perhaps it is because of this backlash that this work has become (unexpectedly) popular.
