Jonathan Demme wasn't interested in serial killer movies

CBS Television in the United States is reportedly planning to produce a series called ``Clarice.'' As you might expect from the title, the film is a sequel to ``The Silence of the Lambs'' (1991), and depicts the activities of FBI agent Clarice, played by Jodie Foster.

The sequel to ``The Silence The Silence of the Lambs'', `` Hannibal '' (2001), depicts Clarice 10 years later, with Julianne Moore playing Clarice, but this series is set one year after ``The Silence The Silence of the Lambs.'' So, it looks like Clarice's Intolerance time will be revealed. The lead role will be played by Australian Rebecca Breeds.

Mads Mikkelsen played a young version of Dr. Lecter from The Silence The Silence of the Lambs in the same TV series Hannibal .

Nearly 30 years have passed since ``The Silence The Silence of the Lambs'' was produced, but its popularity seems to remain strong enough that such programs are still being made. The production of this movie in the 1990s sparked a boom in serial killer movies, and later masterpieces like `` Seven '' (1995) also appeared.

The Silence The Silence of the Lambs won the Academy Awards that year for Best Picture, Best Director (Jonathan Demme), Best Adapted Screenplay (Ted Tully), Best Actor (Anthony Hopkins), and Best Actress (Jodie). Foster) also won five major categories. At the time, it was rare for a mystery with such a dark tone to win an Oscar, and it surprised many.

Now a mystery classic, the original director was not Jonathan Demme, but Hollywood actor Gene Hackman. He acquired the rights to the original work by Thomas Harris, and considered himself to direct and star in the film (he was scheduled to play the role of FBI agent Crawford). However, Hackman dropped out of the project because Ted Tully's script was too violent.

"The Silence The Silence of the Lambs" preview

The production company, Orion Films, turned to Jonathan Demme, a unique director in the independent film industry. Demi looks back on when she was offered this project.

"At the time, I even felt a backlash against making a movie about a serial killer. 'Do I want to make a movie like that?' No, before that, I thought, 'Do I want to see a movie like that?' '' I asked myself, ``But when I read the original book that Orion sent me, I realized that it was a subject that could depict characters with great depth, and that the story was complex and interesting, so I decided to take on this project.'' ” (From “Film Comment” January & February 1991 issue)

What interested the director himself was not the serial killer genre, but the characters and the story.
