The two master and disciples faced off at the Academy Awards.

Braveheart(1995) won five Academy Awards in 1996, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Looking back, this year's Best Picture nominations had a much more diverse lineup than the previous year, when `` Forrest Gump '' (1994) was the best. I feel that the spirit at the time was that `` Apollo 13 '' (1995) and ``Braveheart'' were competing against each other, but now I am looking at the candidate works (`` Apollo 13 '', ``Braveheart'', `` Babe '' , ``Someday Fine Day' '). When I list the songs `` Il Postino '' and ``Il Postino'' in my head, my consciousness somehow goes to `` Babe '' (1995). It is a masterpiece produced and written by the well-known George Miller.

Speaking of Miller, he is the man who made Mel Gibson a star in `` Mad Max .'' But that's not all. Gibson also recalls the directors he worked with when he was young, including George Miller and Peter Weir, saying, ``They were my filmmaking teachers.'' When Gibson became interested in filmmaking and asked him a series of questions, they were not bothersome, and even more so, they did not hesitate to share their techniques, and they carefully explained each and every one of them. (From “Braveheart” audio commentary)

"Braveheart" preview

If Gibson hadn't met Miller early in his career, or if he hadn't had the experience of making such monumental blockbusters as the Mad Max trilogy, he would have never been able to make films on the scale of Braveheart. Could the work really have been created?

From this point of view, I can't help but feel that the ``master-pupil showdown'' between `` Babe '' and ``Braveheart'' was the highlight of the 1996 Academy Awards Best Picture category.
