A famous anecdote in the history of Japanese mini-theaters
The mini-theater boom in Japan occurred from the late 1980s to the early 2000s, and the mini-theater in Shibuya in particular was a driving force in the overall culture. Among them, Cinemarise continued to reign as a "sacred place" for mini theaters.
Cinemarise, which opened in 1986, has produced many hit films such as ` `Trainspotting '' (1996) and ` `Muthu: The Dancing Maharaja '' (1995/released in Japan in 1998). ``Amélie'' set the theater's highest box office revenue. It was released in November 2001 and had a long run of 36 weeks. Its popularity spread throughout Japan, and box office revenue reached a total of 1.6 billion yen. This is an unusual number for a mini-theater movie.

The story of how "Amélie" was distributed in Japan is well known. The distributor was Albatross Film. Kanai Shuntaro, a company that specializes in films with a somewhat eccentric taste, bought this new film by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the director of " Alien Resurrection " (1997), before it was completed, believing it to be a film about a stalker woman. However, it turned out to be a film with a "stylish" aspect that would attract many audiences to Cinema Rise... This story became a big topic in the film industry at the time. Due to the unexpected success of "Amélie," a TV drama " Tokyo Love Cinema " was produced in 2003, modeled on Kanai, and portraying an independent film company, and aired in the "Monday 9" slot. The role of Kanai was played by Eguchi Yosuke, which once again caused a stir in the film industry.
``Amélie'' was a number one hit in 2001 in her native France. It caused a global boom, being nominated in five categories at the Academy Awards: Best Foreign Language Film (currently Best International Feature Film), Best Screenplay, Best Art Design, Best Cinematography, and Best Sound.
