An outstanding idea that takes advantage of the contradictions of traditional horror movies.

The ``wall'' that traditional POV and mockumentary works have been unable to overcome is the ``motivation for the characters to keep the camera rolling.'' You can also call it inevitability. Many POVs often take the form of ``the characters have edited and shown the footage they filmed themselves,'' but the more realistic they pursue, the more they are chased by Monster and Dawn of the Dead. , the audience is left wondering, ``Why do they keep rolling the camera?'' in a situation where they are on the verge of death. In order to solve this problem, the creators have come up with various reasons and had the characters explain them. They said, ``For research'', ``I was ordered by my superiors to record it'', and ``to convey it to people around the world''. However, as someone watching, I end up thinking, "Maybe I should just turn off the camera and run away." This is the self-contradiction that the POV method has, but "One Cut of the Dead”, as the title suggests, exists in a way that clearly explains why the camera cannot be stopped. ...However, if you have already seen the movie and have read this far, you may have noticed something. “One Cut of the Dead” does not fit into the POV genre? and.

Actually, ``One Cut of the Dead” appears to be a POV when you first watch it, but as the movie progresses, you realize that there is no mention of who is filming the footage at all. So, is this a method that uses a completely objective camera, rather than a POV, to fully show the Dawn of the Dead disaster in one cut? But that cannot be said. This is because there is a cut in the middle where the characters are clearly aware of the camera. In fact, this is the film's biggest trick, an innovative idea that takes advantage of the contradictions inherent in POV.

What's more, this idea gives an unparalleled sense of necessity to techniques such as the ``POV style'' and ``one-cut long take,'' and also serves as the driving force for the drama itself.

In some cases, long takes and POV have been used simply to add flavor, and sometimes to cut budgets, but the author has provided an example of how these methods have become so closely linked to the drama that they mesh like precise gears. I don't know of any others. For this invention alone, this film should be etched into the history of cinema.

Much of the film's success is due to the compositional skills of the screenplay and editing, and director Ueda says the following when looking back on the filming.

``This film is fiction, but it is also a documentary about us that summer.''

Ueda, the staff, and the cast rehearsed many times in order to film the 37-minute one-shot scene, and they only had two days for the actual production.

Makoto comes out of the lie. A masterpiece born between mockumentary and documentary. With my writing skills, it is impossible to explain further without spoilers. If you haven't seen it yet, please go to the theater and experience this work, which should be remembered as an ``incident''.

Text: Tetsuya Inagaki

TV director. My personal goal is to realize a documentary project that depicts the obsessions of manga and movie creators. Programs he has directed in the past include ``Gekiga The Godfather : The Man Who Revolutionized Manga'' (WOWOW) and ``Takeshi's Birth: Master of Oira and Asakusa'' (NHK). Currently, he is planning a documentary about a famous manga artist.
