During the Cold War between East and West, Control, the leader of the British intelligence service ``Circus,'' learns surprising information that among the circus executives is a Soviet double agent called ``Mole.'' He sends an agent to contact a Hungarian intelligence source, but when they fail, he takes responsibility and leaves the circus with his right-hand man, Smiley. Soon after, Control dies under mysterious circumstances, and Smiley, who has retired, is given a top secret order to find the Mole. The targets are four executives. As he gets closer to The Truth, the image of his former enemy, the Soviet spy Kara, emerges. Smiley realizes the true purpose of Carla and Mole, and launches into a final battle. What is the true identity of the traitor?

A realistic spy novel from the Cold War written by a former spy.

Britain has a tradition of spy novels. Many of the authors who have made a name for themselves in this genre have experienced first-hand the real-life tactics that unfold behind the scenes of the world through their work as actual spies or government diplomats. As far as novels that have been made into movies are concerned, John Buchan, who is well known for Hitchcock's ` `The Thirty-Nine Steps '' (Japanese title of the movie is ` `The 39 Steps ''), Ian Fleming of the `` 007 '' series, and Graham Greene, known for his work `` The Third Man, '' is a typical example of this.

John le Carré, a spy novelist born in the 1930s, can be said to be his legitimate successor. Apparently, he was still working within the organization when he published his first work, and his activities as a writer were known to all parties involved, and le Carre himself had the manuscript checked and found it to be ``no problem.'' The fact that it was published after obtaining permission suggests that the relationship between the author and the government was quite respectful.
