Kon Ichikawa, a living master who was rediscovered by young audiences
However, by the late 1990s, most famous works had been discovered. Then Pizzicato Five Presents' ``Ten Dark Women'' appeared. It was scheduled to be shown late at Cine Saison Shibuya, but the revival of Shibuya movies up until then had been dominated by Western films, and Kon Ichikawa had a strong image at the time as an active master director. Attention was focused on whether it would be a success or not, but when we opened the lid, it had a long run of 13 weeks at Cine Saison Shibuya, ranking second in late show attendance records (first place was Je t'aime moi non plus, also a revival work).・Non Prue' ') was established.
At the time of its release, it attracted attention as a story about women getting revenge after being toyed with by the main character of a playboy, but it is not that unusual in modern times. Rather than the content itself, the visual aesthetics of 1960s Tokyo, the television industry, and actresses such as Keiko Kishi and Fujiko Yamamoto are captured in beautiful black-and-white images and Kon Ichikawa's graphic sense. It was perfect for the Shibuya movies of the era.
Along with Ten Dark Women, Kon Ichikawa was rediscovered by young audiences from a different perspective from that of the great directors who had been leading Japanese films up until that point, and in addition to his long-acclaimed literary films, Kon Ichikawa was also rediscovered as an experimental director. This triggered attention to be drawn to his early works, which were full of frenzied charm. Kon Ichikawa also created large-scale works worthy of being a master, as well as creating the paper doll animation Shinsengumi (2000), which was full of an experimental spirit and made Ten Dark Women manga panels. The reappraisal and popularity seem to have given new stimulation to Kon Ichikawa in his later years. The proof is that Yasuhi Konishi was the one who wrote the theme song for Shinsengumi.
