Filmmakers surrounding Jarmusch

Jarmusch decides to make a feature-length film based on this story, but it is difficult to raise funds for the work of an unknown independent director. The person who came to the rescue was Paul Bartel, who became known as a B-movie genius with his work in `` Death Race 2000 '' (1975). Jarmusch, who was constantly filming films on a low budget, fell in love with Jarmusch's script and offered to finance it. It seems that Jarmusch was really grateful for this, and his name is written in the end credits as a "special thanks."

Thus, in 1984, ``Stranger Than Paradise'' was completed. The story is divided into three parts, and the first part, titled "New World," is a short story filmed in 1982. The main character, Willy, loves gambling and is involved in horse racing with his bad friend Eddie. The names of the racehorses are "Late Spring," "Dekishin," and "Tokyo Story." These titles are taken from the titles of old Japanese movies, and the horse racing ticket Willy buys is, of course, Ozu's `` Tokyo Story '' (53).

The influence of Ozu and Wenders can also be seen in the film's long takes. Cinematographer Tom DiCillo later made his debut as a film director with `` Johnny Suede '' (1991) starring Brad Pitt, and in recent years has worked on TV series such as ``Chicago Fire.'' DiCillo also appears in Stranger Than Paradise as an airport counter clerk, but another member of Jarmusch's network who should not be forgotten makes an appearance here. Sarah Driver, who plays the role of a woman in a hat who arrives at a drug deal, is the film's producer and Jarmusch's partner both professionally and privately. She is also a film director, and her new work, Basquiat's Last Teenage Years (17), will be released in Japan in December 2018.
