Director Lowry's obsession with considering where to live

As expected, the theme of ``home'' emerges strongly in ``A Ghost Story.'' One is during a casual conversation between a couple. The other thing is that her husband, who has become a ghost, continues to be bound to the land even after transcending time and space.

And if you've been watching Lowry's work for a long time, you'll notice that this theme has been repeated many times in his past works. Even in his breakthrough film, `` Saints ,'' the two lead actors (Casey and Mara, same as in this movie) have a line about ``Are you going to stay here or move to another place?'' Furthermore, the Disney film `` Pete's Secret Friends '' is also a movie in which the main character, a young boy, worries about two places: the forest and human society.

To put it another way, in his works the main character is always separated from his loved ones by some force majeure, and continues to struggle desperately to return to his place. I can't help but think that the consistent appearance of these main characters can also be summed up in that ``ghost clinging to a wall in search of answers.''

By the way, the content of the memo left behind by Rooney Mara's wife is not shown to the audience until the end. During filming, the director encouraged Mara to write something that she thought would be appropriate for this scene. She wrote something that came to her mind and threw it into a gap in the wall. The Day After, when the house collapsed, that piece of paper was lost as well. Later, Lowry asked her, ``What did you write?'' and Mara replied, ``I forgot.''

I don't know if he really forgot or if he didn't want to say it. However, this series of episodes may also be a clue to understanding the worldview of ``A Ghost Story'' and, by extension, the essence of Lowry's work.

What's important is not the content of the "answer" or whether you can get it. I don't know why he continues to be fascinated by things like a place to live. Rather, the light may be shining on the very figure of the person who continues to desperately reach out to grasp something ``vague'' that may have already lost its meaning and purpose.

Director Lowry has always said, ``I'm an atheist, and I don't believe in life after death, but I do believe in ghosts.'' Just as he said, this work shows how even if the reality is lost, only the strong thoughts remain, transcending time and space. Although this is a strange fantasy story, it is a very real story for him. Perhaps Toshihide, who was born in 1980, will continue to weave his thoughts about ``home'' while borrowing the figures of various protagonists, as if floating in the same universe.

Director Lowery's next film is ``The Old Man & the Gun,'' starring Robert Redford, who he also worked with in ``Pete.'' What kind of finish will this film, which is also considered to be the retirement film of a legend in the movie world, turn out to be? We are also looking forward to its arrival in Japan.
