“Somewhere in Time” Synopsis

After the premiere of his play, a playwright named Richard is visited by an old lady. She hands him a gold watch and says, "Come back," before leaving. Eight years later, Richard is drawn to a photograph hanging in a hotel.

Time travel and romance. Dreamy people love you unconditionally, but realistic people just hear about it and ignore it. ``Somewhere in Time'' (80) is a cult work that combines these two somewhat dangerous elements and is still talked about to this day. However, according to star Jane Seymour, the distributor, Universal, had no expectations from the beginning for the film, which cost about $5 million to make. This was because `` The Blues Brothers '' (1980), which was sure to be a huge hit, was scheduled to be released in the same year. As a result, neither Seymour nor co-star Christopher Reeve were able to campaign for the movie. It may have been unfortunate that the film's release coincided with the actors' union strike.

After its release, it spread through word of mouth and has now become a cult.

It is different from the unexpected hits that are rare in Hollywood. That's because ``Somewhere in Time'' ultimately grossed only $9.7 million at the U.S. box office. However, "in the theater". The tide changed after the release ended. It gradually spread by word of mouth through cable TV broadcasts and video rentals, and before we knew it, it became a masterpiece of the "Tear-Jerker" (sounds a little harsh, but it means "Please give us tears") movie. In 2010, it was selected as one of the ``10am Film Festival 50 movies that are amazing no matter how many times I watch them'', and there is even a fan club for the movie (see below).

The original author, Richard Matheson, came up with the idea of combining time travel and romance. Matheson, known for writing the screenplay for Steven Spielberg's `` Duel '' (1971), is said to be his best work, the science fiction novel ``Bid Time Return'' (1975). The story is said to be based on Matheson's actual experience when she saw a photo of a popular actress from yesteryear displayed in a hotel while traveling and was shocked by her beauty.

The key was the idea that came to Matheson's mind at the time, which was typical of a science fiction writer. If I could travel back in time and meet her. . . Matheson's own screenplay was eventually passed on to director Jannot Schwartz, who retitled it ``Somewhere in Time,'' and released it on a small scale.

Somewhere in Time. I'm sure we'll meet somewhere during this time. Believing this, the main character, Richard (Reeve), flies to the era where the person in the photo (Seymour) is waiting, and attempts to fulfill his love. However, space-time travel is inherently fraught with paradoxes. Richard's life-threatening journey was no exception.
