What I wanted to create was a terrestrial version of Star Wars.
It was May 1983. Jerry Bruckheimer, an up-and-coming producer who was attracting attention at the time for films such as `` American Gigolo '' (1980) and ` `Flashdance '' (1983), noticed an article in a magazine. The article, titled "Top Guns," chronicled the life of a fighter pilot based at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego, California.
Bruckheimer was determined to make the film into a movie, and approached his production partner, Don Simpson, with the idea of making a film based on the highly successful science fiction anthology. " Star Wars " (77-). Bruckheimer's intentions were clear. What he was trying to create was a ``Star Wars'' on Earth.

The creator's thoughts are beautifully translated into film. ``Top Gun'' (1986) was a film that captured scenes of real fighter planes dogfighting freely in the sky, and it became a work that is passed down as the best fighter plane movie of all time. The thrill is comparable to what could be called ``Star Wars'' on Earth.
What made this possible was the full cooperation of the U.S. Navy. The F-14 and other practical fighter jets, the Miramar Naval Base, and the inside of the aircraft carrier USS Ranger would have been opened up for filming. With the exception of a portion of the inverted flight scene at the beginning of the movie, all of the footage was shot using real fighter jets. In the movie, not only CG but also optical compositing (a compositing method before digital compositing became mainstream) is not used at all.
