"Joker" Until the victims of society acquire "kingly qualities" - Resonance with evil that touches on taboos

Why Robert De Niro was essential
There are two movies that greatly influenced this work in creating such an effect. `` Taxi Driver '' (1976) and `` The King of Comedy '' (1982). A collaboration between the great director Martin Scorsese and the great actor Robert De Niro. The former depicts the lonely daily life of a taxi driver suffering from insomnia, while the latter chronicles the struggles of a fanatical man who aspires to become a comedian.
The word that sums up these two films is "madness", just like "Joker". ``Taxi Driver'' falls deeper and deeper into darkness, ``The King of Comedy'' falls apart in search of light, and ``Joker'' embodies the two types of madness, yin and yang. The reason this work is set in the early 1980s is because I wanted to bring in the ``smell of the times'' that is present in these works.

The homage to both works is brought to the fore rather than hidden. The famous scene from "Taxi Driver" in which the main character, Travis (De Niro), asks himself in the mirror, "You talkin' to me?" appears almost exactly in "Joker", giving us a glimpse of the dual nature of Arthur/ Joker. The scene in which Arthur dyes his hair and transforms into the Joker coincides with the scene in which Travis, who is plotting to assassinate the president, becomes a mohawk. Furthermore, there are countless links, such as the ``Joker'' that has a very important meaning in ``Joker'' and the direction of a gruesome scene.
The setting is very similar to ``The King of Comedy''. Admiration and obsession with the comedian who is the host of a popular TV show, delusions and reality melting, living alone with his mother in an apartment, and having similar tastes in women, the development from the beginning to the middle of ``Joker'' is similar to ``The King of Comedy''. The great influence of ``Comedy'' is clearly visible.
Arthur's personality is similar to Popkin (De Niro), the main character in The King of Comedy, with a ``bright madness'' that makes those around him recoil. The two works are so similar that you want to watch them side by side, as the story revolves around people thinking, ``What if I could appear on my dream talk show?'' It can be said that the existence of ``Taxi Driver'' and ``The King of Comedy'' created the soil for the birth of the man known as the Joker.

At the beginning of this article, I wrote that ``Robert De Niro is the most important cast member,'' and the reason for that was probably because I wanted to further strengthen the link between ``Taxi Driver'' and ``The King of Comedy .'' In `` Joker ,'' Robert De Niro plays the role of the comedian that Pupkin coveted in ``The King of Comedy .'' Instead, Joaquin Phoenix will play the role of Pupkin or Travis, and there is also a significant "generational change".
``Taxi Driver'' and ``The King of Comedy'' were inherited by ``Joker.'' It's fun to watch these two movies again after watching ``Joker''.
