I was looking forward to director Kurosawa's "fixes".

Q: I was curious about the part you just mentioned, but how was the division of script production between the three parties?

Kurosawa: Simply put, I haven't done anything.

Hamaguchi: That's not true (lol)!

Kurosawa: I added bits and pieces to what Hamaguchi and Nohara had written, and I tried to shorten it while thinking, ``I'm sorry.'' By the time it came to me, it was already 80% completed.

Hamaguchi: I wrote a lot of dialogue, and it was close to a script, but I think it was still a plot at that point. Basically, Nohara-kun and I talked, each wrote a part, and we both acted as readers and exchanged opinions as we created the story. After I received feedback from Mr. Kurosawa on the finished product, I got a sense that ``I see, that's the direction we're going in,'' and then I made some minor adjustments and asked him to look at it again... and I kept repeating the process.

However, in the end, the main premise was that Mr. Kurosawa would be free to make any changes. That's what I want to see. Also, even when we were students, we never had the opportunity to have Kurosawa-san fix the scripts we had written. In fact, I was looking forward to wondering, ``How would Kurosawa-san fix it? What would he cut?''

Q: So, there was a kind of fan-like feeling between Mr. Hamaguchi and Mr. Nohara.

Nohara: Yes, there is. I was so happy watching the torture scenes and thinking, ``This is how they filmed it!'' (lol).

Kurosawa: There was no torture scene in the script.

Hamaguchi: This is Kurosawa-san! It was that kind of feeling.

Kurosawa: I thought I'd include it just in case...

Hamaguchi: However, I think it was more difficult to cut down the parts to fit the scale than the parts that Mr. Kurosawa added. The script we wrote was a bit long and contained some ambiguity. While keeping the basics, you made it clearer, which I learned a lot from now.

Nohara: I think they probably cut about 10 scenes.

Kurosawa: Isn't it good to keep it within a certain size? No major changes will be made, just keep it as long as necessary. That's pretty much all I did with the script. But length is important for movies. It might be the only part I'm proud of (lol).

Hamaguchi/Nohara: No, no (lol)!
