The love between teacher and student that created ``The Spy's Wife.'' Interview with Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, and Ichi Nohara [Director's Interview Vol.84]
Hamaguchi and Nohara's respect for director Kurosawa
Q: How was the challenge of working on “The Spy’s Wife” for Mr. Hamaguchi and Mr. Nohara?
Hamaguchi: Normally, after I write it as a scriptwriter, I hand it over to myself as a film director. At that time, I think, ``This is impossible,'' and I cut back and scale things down. It was fun because I was freed from that ``responsibility on set'' and I was thinking of borrowing the confidence that ``If it was Kurosawa-san, I would definitely be fine.''
Nohara: Up until now, most of the things I've been involved in have been contemporary dramas, but when it comes to contemporary dramas, I think, ``You can't say such strong lines. What kind of incident do I need to create in order to say these words?'' turn into. However, in this case, the event of ``war'' has already taken place, so strong words come into play.
Hamaguchi: It was a discovery that even when the emotions are so heightened, there is still reality. I would like Mr. Kurosawa to take pictures of this era again...not just this era, but things that are far removed from reality. I really want to see it.
Nohara: I also want to see various works by Kurosawa.
Q: It's starting to feel like a fan meeting... (lol)
Kurosawa: (laughs). thank you.
