"Ora Ora de Hitori Igumo" Director Shuichi Okita I don't want to see "warm everyday life" (lol) [Director's Interview Vol.90]
Yuko Tanaka even composes a song when they meet for the first time
Q: Please tell me about the background of Yuko Tanaka's appearance.
Okita: After the script was completed, I spoke with the producer and Yuko Tanaka came forward. Tanaka-san is still a little young compared to Momoko-san's age, but when I thought about Tanaka-san playing the role, I was so excited that I couldn't think of anyone else other than Tanaka-san.
Q: What was it like when you first met Mr. Tanaka?
Okita: There is a scene in the play where Momoko sings, and Tanaka-san had thought carefully about what kind of scene it would actually be. That scene was created to highlight Momoko's loneliness, and I thought it would be interesting, so I made it look like a pop-up show. The content of the song hadn't been decided yet, but Mr. Tanaka came up with an idea for it. It was our first meeting, but he actually sang and we hurriedly recorded it on our iPhones (lol).
Q: You're very motivated and prepared.
Okita: Rather than that, it seems like he came up with it because he was worried about what he should do. I never dreamed that someone would sing to me and say, ``What if it felt like this?'' Musician Masato Suzuki composed a song based on that song, and we recorded the song before cranking in.
Q: Director Okita often works with famous actors, including Yuko Tanaka, Koji Yakusho, Tsutomu Yamazaki, and Kirin Kiki. Everyone seems to be acting at their usual pace, but somehow I feel like they're really getting into Okita's movies.
Okita: What everyone has in common is that they want to work in a world that I like. On this set, there were times when Mr. Tanaka and I differed in the nuances of the play, but Mr. Tanaka did his best to go in the direction the director had in mind. Personally, I'm happy, but there are times when I want to take what Tanaka-san says seriously, and I sometimes don't know which is better (lol).
Actors are very aware of what's interesting about a script, and they make suggestions about things that might be better. And that's often correct.
