"Arabian Nights: 3000 Years of Wish" Director George Miller Why do we tell stories? [Director's Interview Vol.287]

Based on the stories that director George Miller has told so far, such as the `` Mad Max '' series (79-15), `` The Twilight Zone '' (83), `` Babe '' (99), ``Happy Feet '' (2006), etc. We have been fascinated by the darkness of movie theaters. His latest work, ``Arabian Nights: 3000 Years of Wish,'' is a story for the sake of a story, with the motif of ``The Thousand and One Nights.'' How does George Miller perceive the act of telling a story (storytelling), and how does he visualize it? We were able to take the precious time of a very busy master and speak directly to director George Miller himself. What do the world's great masters think about stories and filmmaking? Please enjoy it.

A story is born when the concept of time is added.

Q: This work is a ``story for a story'' with the motif of ``One Thousand and One Nights.'' The works that the director himself has made so far are allegorical, and he has been able to truly tell ``stories.'' What do you think about telling stories using the medium of film?

Miller: I was always drawing from my childhood until I was in college. At the time, I wasn't really interested in telling stories through film, but I was interested in creating pictures as moving images. I was lucky enough to have the Being There to make a small film, and I even edited it myself, and that's when I realized something. Paintings are flat and two-dimensional, but movies add the concept of time to that. The moment you add that, the narrative becomes more propulsive. The nature of the image itself is that it changes, so as soon as it becomes a movie, you can no longer ignore the story. The process of making a film is how to convey this through images and music. It made me realize that.

Another strength of video is that it speaks directly to the visual and auditory senses, and it encompasses all artistic skills such as script writing, composition, spoken words, design, acting, camera work, and angle of view. It is also a big attraction. There is also the power of pulling from one image to the next, and a movie is something that contains all of that. Making a film is inviting everyone into a special story. I would be happy if the audience could feel that.
