The Indiana Jones series was created by the powerful duo of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. Four films have been made so far, all directed by Spielberg. This film, Indiana Jones and the Dial, is said to be the final chapter in the series, with Spielberg serving as executive producer and the directorial baton passed to James Mangold. Director Mangold is known for his ability to balance action and drama with films such as ` `LOGAN '' (2017) and `` Ford v Ferrari '' (2019), but how did he approach this legendary series? The idea of ``Dial of Destiny''

Q: I heard that plans for Indy 5 have been in the works for many years, but how did you decide to participate?

Mangold: I first joined this project as a screenwriter. Two years ago. I was a fan of the series, and Steven [Spielberg] and George [Lucas] and of course Harrison [Ford] are my heroes. I thought it was a unique Being There to work with them. However, in order to do that, you have to write a proper script. This is because in my own work, I always either write the script myself or give advice to the screenwriter, so I wanted to do the same with this work. So I first wrote a script that I was satisfied with, and then I directed it after it was completed.

Q: So "Dial of Destiny" was your idea?

Mangold: Yeah, that's me. The reason why I was so particular about that item has a lot to do with Harrison's age. The first problem I had was how to tell the Indiana Jones story with a (then) 79-year-old actor as the main character. We should think about aging, and what it's like for a hero in his later years. I thought it would be dishonest to talk about this series without touching on those issues.

Q: Did you consider Indy's age when you set the time period in 1969?

Mangold: Yes. The idea of setting the story in the late 60's is deeply connected to the idea of what kind of hero Indy would be if he was 70 years old. Specifically, the year 1969 was the year in which Apollo 11 landed on the moon, and the person who was instrumental in that accomplishment was Wernher von Braun, a scientist and former member of the Nazi party. We brought elements of Von Braun to our villain, Forer, played by Mads [Mikkelsen]. I thought it would be interesting to see such a person pursuing a diabolical plan.

Q: How did the idea for “Dial of Destiny” come about?

Mangold: This also has a lot to do with Indy's age. Don't you think that when people reach old age, they think about things like ``I wish I could turn back time'' and ``I wonder what my life would have been like if I had gone back to that time and made different choices?'' The item "Dial of Destiny" is inspired by this idea. This movie is an honest depiction of what it means for people to reach the later years of their lives.
