The charm of the haunted family “The Addams Family” [Mizumaru Kawahara’s CINEMONOLOGUE Vol.4]
I like that it's a normal family somehow.
The Addams are a spooky family of ghosts who live in an abandoned mansion, love poison and torture devices, and feel the joy of living on stormy days, but they are not really ghosts. Although they may have unusual behavior, constitutions, and abilities, they are basically normal people. It's just creepy and weird.
As a normal human being, I sometimes feel that my life is in danger, and I also fear death. In the movie, the story begins when Gomez's older brother Fester returns after being missing for many years, and Gomez is moved when he reunites with the brother he thought he would never see again (though Uncle Fester is no matter what happens to him). Although it looks like he won't die...)
Even in the Addams family, where there is always an ominous feeling that reminds us of death, the death of a family member is of course sad and frightening.
I think the charm of this work is not only the stylish black humor and creepy props, but also the fact that there is a relatively ordinary family in the midst of these elements. He may be building a coffin or a torture rack, but he still looks like a father with his shirt sleeves rolled up, working with his children on a do-it-yourself project. While this may be an ordinary scene of a mother reading to her children before bed, there is a collection of road signs borrowed from somewhere on the wall of the room. It's basically a normal house, and the people themselves think of themselves as a normal family. That's why the gap that is created is so fun.
It may be similar to Hanna-Barbera Productions' animations ``The Flintstones'' and `` The Jetsons, '' which have a unique worldview but are still stories about ordinary families, so they are easy to get into. (Incidentally, ``The Addams Family'' was also made into an animation by Hanna-Barbera).
Every family has its own personality, and each house has different rules. The case of the Addams family is simply that. I love families that are honest and confident in who they are, and I also admire the works of Charles Addams, who convey everything in one frame without unnecessary explanation.
The affinity between Burton and the Addams family may, of course, be due to their similar eerie atmosphere and gothic tastes, but it also lies in the fact that they affirm their quirky individuality and are confident about it.
Burton was influenced by Seuss's works including "The Grinch," Burton's affinity with "The Addams Family," and the fact that "The Addams Family" was being planned by Burton and Illumination (or at least that was the rumor). When I think about it, I feel that Illumination's upcoming animated version of "The Grinch" is a coincidence, but is there any possibility of Burton's version of "The Addams Family" happening in the future?
