Verhoeven, who experienced World War II, is particular about depicting battles.

Born in the Netherlands, Verhoeven spent his childhood in his home country under Nazi rule, and witnessed World War II with his own eyes despite his restricted life. Needless to say, the Nazis are detestable to him. The climax scene of the spaceship destruction reflects the fireworks-like bombing scene that Verhoeven saw in the night sky as a child. In addition, the military uniform worn by Karl in the second half of the film was modeled after that of a high-ranking Nazi official.

The frontline battle scenes are very vivid, but the first shocking scene is when Johnny and his friends first arrive on the Bugs' planet. This scene, in which they immediately engage in combat with the Bugs, was inspired by the footage of the Normandy landings during World War II. It is the same brutal battlefield that was recreated at the beginning of " Saving Private Ryan " (1998). Other war movies that inspired the battle scenes in this film include " The Dirty Dozen " (1967), " The Disastrous Life of David" (1968), and " Beau Jest " (1939).

However, the MVP of the battle scenes was undoubtedly Phil Tippett, the visual effects specialist who created the Bugs. Up until then, alien creatures in movies had typically appeared alone for a split second in the dark, with consideration given to not letting it be obvious that they were unnatural and artificial. However, Tippett created an incredible scene in which a large number of Bugs squirm in broad daylight and attack humanity. This was made possible by further developing the computer system developed in " Jurassic Park ."

The Bugs' sharp tentacles pierce human bodies. Arms and legs are torn off. The depictions, which earned the film an R rating, are certainly brutal. But Verhoeven is a director who does not censor the brutality of his work. He mercilessly depicted violence in visuals not only in his early works, which he shot in his native Holland, but also in films after he made his Hollywood debut with RoboCop and Basic Instinct . At times it is excessive, but it goes without saying that this violence was something that needed to be depicted. In the midst of the crazy circumstances of combat, it is only natural that it would become more intense.
