J.J. Abrams returns

The resurrection of a legend.

From the moment Walt Disney Co. acquired Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion and the plan for the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy was launched under new president Kathleen Kennedy, this project became one of the most difficult adventures in the history of cinema. How to reboot the series that movie fans around the world have been waiting for? Talented and talented filmmakers were chosen for the extremely difficult mission.

Episode 7, Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), will be directed by J.J. Abrams (Super 8 ) (2011). Episode 8, Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) will be directed by Rian Johnson (Looper ) (2012). And the final chapter, Episode 9, Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker(2019), will be directed by Colin Trevorrow ( Jurassic World ) (2015). Just as the original trilogy was passed on to George Lucas ( Episode IV: A New Hope , 77), Irvin Kershner ( Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back , 80), and Richard Marquand ( Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, 83), the baton has been passed on in a relay style.

However, when they lost George Lucas, the absolute creator, that method was too risky. There was no key person who could lead the entire creative team, such as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, and no one to draw up a grand design. In fact, J.J. Abrams had also produced a rough treatment for the entire trilogy, but no one paid any attention to it.

"Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker" Trailer

The screenplay for Episode 7 written by J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan was shared with Rian Johnson, who was in charge of Episode 8, and the screenplay he wrote was shared with Colin Trevorrow, who was in charge of Episode 9. The project of the century was a style in which the directors each created their own story, which were then strung together, and filming began as soon as Kathleen Kennedy gave the go-ahead. At best, it was auteuristic, but at worst, it was haphazard. At least in terms of the consistency of the trilogy, it turned out to be a bad thing.

J.J. Abrams' strategy in " The Force Awakens " was to faithfully inherit the spirit of the old trilogy. He blatantly referenced " A New Hope " and created a movie that old fans could enjoy to their heart's content. However, Rian Johnson made " The Last Jedi " as a counter to the great series. He broke the "story of lineage" that only those with the blood of the Skywalker family were the chosen ones, and presented a new worldview in which anyone can control the Force.

The thesis presented in Episode 7 is turned upside down as an antithesis in Episode 8. So what direction should Episode 9 take? Moreover, Colin Trevorrow, who is the key to the series, has stepped down as director due to "creative differences of opinion." In the midst of this chaotic situation, J.J. Abrams has suddenly returned as director as a pinch hitter.

It was a bolt from the blue. This is what it means to pick up chestnuts from a fire. J.J. Abrams, who opened the sequel trilogy with a flourish, has unexpectedly been tasked with bringing it down.
