A masterpiece by a master artist celebrating his 100th anniversary

On January 20, 2020, Federico Fellini celebrated his 100th birthday. Although he was a leading figure in the golden age of Italian cinema and passed away in 1993, his fantastical works have never faded and are loved by movie fans as "living history." continues to be done.

Among them, ``8½'' (63) can be considered Fellini's masterpiece. Although there are other famous works such as `` The Road '' (54) and `` La Dolce Vita '' (60), the main character who appears is a projection of Fellini, that is, the ``self'' is brought to the fore in a profound way. In a sense, this can be said to be a movie that exposes the whole body and soul.

“8½” preview

The films he makes are often compared to ``circuses''. If the films made by Visconti, who was in the spotlight during his time and was seen as a rival, were operas, Fellini's films were circuses. According to what I hear, he has admired the circus since he was a child and even wished he could run away from home and travel with the troupe. It is no surprise that when he became an adult and had the means to make his dreams a reality, it became a circus itself. In that case, the main character Guido (Marcello Mastroianni), who is his projection, is just like the clown who stands at the center of the troupe.
