"A Chorus Line" synopsis

Zack (Michael Douglas), a popular director, holds auditions to select four male and four female chorus dancers for his new show. Zach relentlessly asks the 16 young people selected from hundreds of young people, revealing their true faces about their upbringing, parents, family, sexual experiences, sexuality, plastic surgery, etc. Meanwhile, Zack's ex-girlfriend Cassie (Alison Reed) rushes to the audition venue. She left him to become a Hollywood actress, but her dreams were shattered and she returned. Zack dismisses her, saying, ``There's no way she can handle the chorus,'' but Cassie pleads with her to participate in the audition, saying, ``Dance is the only thing I can do.'' The audition progresses as the lives of the 16 people and the relationship between Zack and Cassie intertwine.

Should I adapt a stage play to a movie or a movie to a stage?

If we go back through the history of film and look back at the great musical films, we can see that there are so-called masterpieces such as ` `West Side Story ,'' ` `The Sound of Music ,'' ` `South Pacific ,'' `` The King and I ,'' and ` `My Fair Lady .'' Works from the golden age of musicals often consisted of film adaptations of Broadway plays. On the other hand, songs such as `` Singin' in the Rain '', `` An American in Paris '', and `` The Band Wagon '' are movie originals. This pattern was created for musical stars such as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire in the era, and became a masterpiece.

Although the number of musical films has been on the decline since the end of the golden era in the 1970s, a new trend was born. The process is from movie to stage musical. Examples include `` I'll lend you the key to my apartment '' → ``Promises Promises'', `` Mr. Lady Mr. Madame '' → ``La Cage au Folle'', and `` 42nd Avenue '' → ``42 Second Street.'' However, it was Disney animation that made this trend a ``trend''. The blockbuster hits that began in the late 1980s, such as `` Beauty and the Beast and the Beast,'' ``The Little Mermaid,'' `` Aladdin ,'' and `` The Lion King ,'' were all turned into stage musicals, along with the redevelopment of the Broadway district. be done. This trend spread beyond Disney animation, and musicals such as `` A Love Song for Angels' ', `` Kinky Boots '', `` Billy Elliot '', and `` Once Upon a Street Corner '' were made into musicals one after another.

Another pattern has begun to appear: a three-stage production: a movie, then a stage musical, and then the stage musical, which is then adapted into a movie. Some titles remain the same, such as ` `Little Shop of Horrors ,'' `` The Producers ,'' and `` Hairspray ,'' while others have changed titles, such as ``8½,'' ``Nine,'' and ``NINE.'' Some works go through stages. None of the original films were musicals (though Hairspray had a lot of music).
