The series of setbacks that brought Oliver Stone to Vietnam

Oliver Stone was the only son of a New York stockbroker father and French mother. Although he came from a wealthy family, his parents were busy and he has few memories of spending time with them. At the age of 13, Stone was sent to an all-boys boarding school with strict discipline, and when he was in second grade, the principal informed him that his parents had divorced. Both parents had mistresses. Stone felt the shock of being torn down and abandoned. This experience is said to have had a tremendous impact on Stone's humanity.

He went on to the prestigious Yale University, but took a leave of absence after six months. Stone had dreamed of becoming a novelist since he was a boy, and wrote novels while working as a crew member on a merchant ship. Although he was proud of his 1,400-page debut novel, titled ``A Child's Night Hidden Figures,'' no publishers were interested. Stone, a 20-year-old athlete, has fallen off the elite course, failed to achieve his dreams, and was disappointed by his parents. Desperate, he impulsively joined the army.

"I really wanted to kill myself. Instead, I went into combat. I volunteered to be an infantryman in Vietnam, and the military gave it to me."

Obsessed with thoughts of death, Stone heads to the battlefield in Vietnam. There, he meets a great figure who can be called his "father." It was Elias and Barnes. Elias and Burns, played by William Dafoe and Tom Berenger in Platoon, had a model with the same name.

The real-life Elias and Burns, as portrayed in the film, were relied on by everyone on the battlefield and became like older brothers and fathers to Stone. The two men were in different units and did not know each other, but Stone decided to write the script by pitting them against each other within the same platoon. The main character, Chris, respects his two superiors but is torn between them, reminding us of the childhood stone that was torn between his parents. Stone also had an experience in Vietnam that tore apart his own sense of ethics.
