Numerous stars who have produced

Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Ralph Macchio, C. Thomas Howell... All of them are up-and-coming actors who have just made their debut, and it is undeniable that ``The Outsider'' became their breakthrough. Only Leif Garrett is famous in the music world and is already active as an actor, and the only one, Diane Lane, was recognized for her role in ``A Little Romance '' (1979). (It was popular in Japan). Coppola's eye for discovering young talent is astonishing.

Many of the cast members were selected through auditions. Emilio Estevez and Tom Cruise have been friends since childhood and attended auditions together. Emilio's father was Martin Sheen, and Emilio accompanied Coppola to the set of Apocalypse Now , where he played a small role as a messenger boy.

The audition format was also unique. The actors gathered together took turns changing roles in a given scene. As a result, Coppola cast the characters to suit their personalities. Those who participated in the audition but were not selected include Dennis Quaid, Mickey Rourke, and Sarah Jessica Parker. Rourke was later cast in Coppola's next film, Rumble Fish (1983).

Coppola's nephew, Nicolas Cage, also auditioned, but although he was particular about one role and spent two weeks preparing, he did not get the role he wanted and Coppola asked him to audition again for another role. However, he declined the offer because he no longer had the energy to do so.

At the time of filming, only Patrick Swayze was 29 years old, but Ralph Macchio and Leif Garrett were 20 years old, and many of the other cast members were teenagers. After that, Matt Dillon starred in "Rumble Fish," Tom Cruise starred in " Risky Business " (1983), Ralph Macchio starred in " The Karate Kid " (1984), and Rob Lowe starred in " St. Elmo's Fire " (1985). , Emilio Estevez in `` The Breakfast Club '' (1985), and Patrick Swayze in `` Dirty Dancing '' (1987), which solidified his status as a major star.

Incidentally, Coppola's daughter, Sofia Coppola, plays a girl who asks Matt Dillon if he has any change, and Hinton, who wrote the original, also makes a cameo appearance as a nurse.

The cast of ``Grease'' and ``Socks'' were given various ``disparities,'' and the scripts for the Socks version had a leather cover, while the Grease version had a simple paperback-like binding. During the filming period, they stayed at different hotels. Coppola seems to have wanted to create a constant tension between the two groups.

Since the cast was mostly young, trouble continued, such as the members getting violent at the hotel outside of filming time. Tom Cruise reportedly apologized to the hotel staff several years later.

Because the film featured a lot of brawling action, injuries to the cast were constant: Emilio Estevez had a cut lip, C. Thomas Howell was punched in the face and had a black bruise around his eye, and Tom Cruise suffered a broken thumb. In addition to breaking his bones, he was punched in the jaw and had to undergo dental treatment.

In this way, the young actors brought into the world by ``The Outsider'' came to be known as ``YA stars,'' and became the origin of the ``Brat Pack,'' which I wrote about at the beginning.

The name Brat Pack came into use two years later, around the time of ``Outsider- Stars such as Andrew McCarthy, Andrew McCarthy, and Sean Penn were born one after another and became a major force in Hollywood, and masterpieces of youth films such as those of John Hughes were mass-produced.

The literal translation of Brat Pack is ``a group of bad boys,'' which is a somewhat derogatory term. It is also a play on the ``Rat Pack,'' which originated with Humphrey Bogart and others in the 1950s and was later formed by Frank Sinatra and others.
