A cult work among the American youth films of the 1980s

1980s. In the United States, action movies and youth films were mass-produced, and major Hollywood studios succeeded in attracting young people. In particular, youth films star young stars known as the ``Brat Pack'' (meaning a group of brats), and thanks to the support of MTV, which started in 1981, the theme song music video was aired in large numbers before its release, making it an excellent film. It had a great advertising effect. Among the comedic group melodramas typified by director John Hughes, this 1983 film, Rumble Fish, has a unique style and a unique presence, and still has a strong fan base. It is a cult youth film with a unique character.

The story takes place in the daily lives of high school students. However, the images, which were cut using black-and-white film rather than color, give the impression of something artificial and daydream-like. It stars young stars like Matt Dillon and Diane Lane, who were popular at the time, but it's not a typical love story, and in fact, although they do have a lot of roles, it feels like they're only secondary protagonists. There is no tear-jerking orchestra, and the story is driven by an irregular percussion rhythm that is difficult to categorize. There is no exhilarating catharsis overflowing with dynamism, but it is a film that is full of the naivety and boldness that is typical of boys, and that slowly comes off like a jab, making a small but strong impression.

“Rumble Fish” preview

I thought it was a very young director who was very particular about what he wanted to do, but that's not the case at all. Coppola is famous for his work on `` The Godfather '' (1972) and `` Apocalypse Now '' (1979). Why did Coppola, who seems to have only made megalomaniac historical picture scrolls, decide to make a low-budget, experimental film like this one? The answer lies in the director's checkered filmography.
