“Ghosts of Mars” synopsis
The story takes place in 2176 AD on Mars, where humans have established a colony. After escaping Earth and establishing a colony on Mars, 640,000 humans lived in remote areas. Their main task was to mine Mars' abundant natural resources. Melanie Ballard, a female inspector of the Mars Police Department, is ordered to escort a violent prisoner, Williams, with a total of five people under the command of Captain Braddock. However, when they arrive, the place has turned into a ghost town filled with miserable corpses. Only a few criminals, including Williams in prison, were left alive.

John Carpenter's wave of reappraisal
In recent years, many films have paid homage to the horror and action genius John Carpenter. `` Halloween '' (1978) and `` Object X '' (1982), which remain in horror history, are in a class of their own, and posters for `` Escape from New York '' (1981) and `` They Live '' (1988) are posted in the rooms of young characters. In particular, I don't think I'm the only Carpenter fan who feels a wave of reappraisal. In a sense, it's only natural that the current film industry is supported by the generation that spent their impressionable childhoods in the 1980s, when these films were made.
What frustrates me as a fan is that works from the 1990s onwards have yet to see that wave. One film that has received particularly unfair praise is 2001's Ghosts of Mars. No, I'm fully aware that in a sense, it can't be helped. In the United States, critics began criticizing him as ``nostalgic'' and ``conservative,'' and that's when he started to be criticized. This film was released in the United States in two weeks, probably due to the successive release of " Mission to Mars " (2000) and " Red Planet " (2000), which were also set on Mars. It ended in a disastrous defeat, with the series being canceled.

Due to the disastrous results in its home country, there was a moment when it was doubtful that it would be released in Japan, but it made it to the US a year later. It was quite a smash hit for a big box office hit in the US. I also saw it at this time, and even if you don't look at it as a Carpenter fan, it's still interesting! I felt that. In this article, I will once again focus on such unfortunate works and explore Carpenter's designs.
