"Rio Bravo" synopsis

Sheriff Being There arrests the rogue Joe for murder in Rio Bravo, a town near the Mexican border. However, Joe's older brother, Nathan, who rules this town, demands his brother's release, blocks the town, and sends paid gunmen into the town. The residents are scared and no one will take Being There. His only allies are Stumpy, an old man with a crippled leg, Dude, an alcoholic sheriff's assistant, and Colorado, a young man passing through town who shoots quickly. They risk their will as gunslingers and bravely face the challenge.

When you think of Quentin Tarantino's favorite Western movies, the first thing that comes to mind is ``Rio Bravo'' (1959). He once said that he would show a woman this movie before starting a relationship, and if she didn't react well, he would break up with her.

What is it about him that makes him perform such a tasteless "ritual"? Here, I would like to explain the tremendous entertainment value of ``Rio Bravo'' and the reason why the work reached that point.

“Duel at Midday” vs. “Rio Bravo”

The Western film `` Duel at Noon '' (52), starring Gary Cooper and directed by Fred Zinnemann, is considered one of the greatest Westerns in film history.

Its characteristic feature is that it depicts a drama so harsh that you might think it is a social work. The story is set in a battle between the righteous sheriff, played by Cooper, who protects the town, and four villains plotting revenge. When the sheriff hears that four people who are targeting him will arrive in town on a train at noon, he asks the townspeople to help, but no one is willing to help, as their lives are at stake. Not everyone is on the side of justice.

This ironic work, which intentionally leaves a bad aftertaste even at the end, is thought to be a satire on the devastation of America's Red Scare, an effort to eliminate communists that was also prevalent in Hollywood. By depicting a sheriff who is betrayed by the people he protects, he destroys the traditional image of western movies, and instead creates a liberal film that rebels against the "conservative" values that have been portrayed in western movies. ``Duel at Midday'' was greeted with surprise and praised because it incorporated such ideas.

However, there were those who were dissatisfied with it. John Wayne, a representative star of Western movies, and Howard Hawks, a master film director who has shot films of various genres in Hollywood and has also been involved in Western movies. In the director's film Red River (1948), Hawks pits the actor Montgomery Clift, who symbolizes a new era, against John Wayne, who symbolizes the ideas of an old era, and praises both. Despite this, he was a person who believed in the "good old American spirit."

There were many discriminatory remarks behind the scenes, and there is an anecdote that Montgomery Clift was fed up with Hawks and Wayne's repeated rude behavior on the set of ``Red River.'' Actress Lauren Bacall, who was discovered by him, has exposed his disdain for Jews in her book.

There's no way that Wayne and Hawks would be happy about the situation where ``Duel at Midday'' is receiving so much praise. Hawks, who had criticized the inertia of the sheriff in the film, who asked for help from ordinary citizens, was determined to make a real Western, even though he had been away from film production for four years. This film, ``Rio Bravo,'' was filmed with Wayne in the lead role, a Western film that rivals ``Rio Bravo at Midday.''
