A world that matures with age

I rewatched ``Hannah and Her Sisters'' (1986) for the first time in a long time, and the depth of it really touched my heart.

The setting is Manhattan, a wealthy area of New York. A story about the love and marriage of three sisters who live there. You'll feel like you've been to New York as you take in the jazzy music and see the sophisticated restaurants, clubs, bookstores, and buildings. A "fashionable New York" catalog that would be featured in a fashion magazine...

However, if you look closely, this is only a superficial element. The themes underlying Woody Allen's films, such as sexuality, the state of death, and dialogue with God, are at the heart of the film, and the cruel meaning of aging can also be read.

However, since it has a comedic touch, even such heavy themes are portrayed with a sprinkle of laughter. Therein lies the magic of the artist Woody Allen.

"Hannah and Her Sisters" trailer

It was first released in 1987, when Japan was beginning to enjoy the bubble economy. As a sophisticated love story, it was a hot topic at theaters in Tokyo (released for five weeks at New Toho Cinema 2 in Ginza). At that time, the city of New York was truly shining, and one of its symbolic directors was Woody Allen.

However, in the 21st century, the city of New York bore the scars of the September 11th events. Woody Allen's own position in the film industry deteriorated after the incident of sexual abuse of Mia Farrow's adopted daughter Dylan became a problem.

Nowadays, it's difficult to approach Allen's films with the same innocence that I had when they first came out, but the films themselves still stand as solid as a mountain.

Allen was 51 years old in the year this film was released, and was already in the latter stages of his life. Rewatching ``Hannah and Her Sisters,'' you can see that his worldview has matured over the years.
