Difficult casting considering singing ability and popularity

In the end, Gerard Butler was chosen as the Phantom. This was a time when he was solidifying his status as a star actor by starring in films such as `` Draculaia '' (2000), so the reason why he was chosen was probably due to his popularity, even though he was only a vocalist in a rock band when he was a student. According to director Schumacher, the reason for his appointment was, ``The role of the Phantom required a slightly dangerous roughness and a rock'n'roll spirit.I was confident that Jerry [Butler] would be able to hear a rock-style tenor. ”.

In this movie, the Phantom only speaks 14 lines in normal dialogue. The rest was all expressed through song, so Butler underwent rigorous training and took on the challenge of recording and filming. Incidentally, both Rossum and Butler confessed that they had not seen the stage version before being offered the roles.

Patrick Wilson, who will play the role of Raoul, who falls in love with Christine, has also appeared on Broadway in ``Oklahoma!'' and ``The Full Monty.'' The three main cast members had their voices undubbed, as Lloyd Webber had requested, but Minnie Driver's singing voice was dubbed as she played the role of opera singer Carlotta. However, Driver also has a background as a singer, and Lloyd-Webber paid tribute to her by having her sing on " Learn to Be Lonely, " which plays in the end titles.

The melody of "Learn to Be Lonely" was originally titled "No One Would Listen" and was a new song created for the movie. The lyrics were different, and Phantom was supposed to sing it in the movie, but it was cut (it remains as unreleased footage).

In addition, new music was added to scenes created for the film, such as the grave visit and the Phantom's past spectacle, but regarding the familiar songs from the stage version, Lloyd-Webber said, ``The key and pitch are... We haven't changed anything at all.''The music has remained faithful to the original, and as a result, fans of the stage version have been very satisfied.
