Too...too faithful visualization
Watchmen(2009), directed by Zack Snyder, is a very ambitious film. A masterpiece American comic that was said to be difficult to visualize has been made into a movie with careful visual expression. It succeeded in attracting many audiences. Snyder is skilled at expressing a dark worldview with heavy images, and it can be said that he successfully translated the atmosphere of the original work into images. However, when I look back on it now, I feel that the flow of the film as a movie is somewhat lacking. The whole thing feels surprisingly flat.
This may be due to the lack of a clear protagonist as it is a group drama about superheroes, or the fact that the complex and multi-layered story of the original work was compressed into movie size. However, I think the biggest factor is that the original comic was so faithfully visualized.
“Watchmen” preview
The story is mostly the same, with minimal adaptations. Even in terms of composition, there are many cuts that are exact reproductions of comic book images, and even the characters' lines are faithfully followed in the direction of the next scene. Why was director Snyder so particular about following the comics? To proceed with this discussion, it is necessary to unravel the original author Alan Moore's intentions for the comic version of `` Watchmen .''
