A story born from my screenwriter father's The Graduate

In Back to the Future(1985), high school student Marty from 1985 travels back in time 30 years. Furthermore, `` Part 2 '' (1989) jumps 30 years into the future, and `` Part 3 '' (1990) jumps 100 years into the past. However,... No matter how much time you jump, the setting of the story remains the same. The story does not take place outside of the fictional town of Hill Valley, located somewhere in California.

Back to the Back to the Future began when director Robert Zemeckis and his college classmate, screenwriter Bob Gale, were excited to make a time-travel movie. However, she had no concrete ideas and put it on hold, until Gail saw her father's The Graduate in her parents' house and the idea came to her.

It was then that Gail learned for the first time that her father had been the student council president during her high school days. Gail, who couldn't imagine her father being an honor student, came up with the idea of a high school student who travels back in time to witness a side of her parents that she didn't know about, and the main character, Marty, who tries to mediate the romance between his parents in their youth, was born. Noda.

It's unclear how much of Bob Gale's own background and his family's background was reflected in the script, but the initial script had Marty as a nerdy boy who makes pirated videos. The studio was reluctant, so the character was changed to a rock-loving character, but Gail, who grew up in a suburban neighborhood and spent her childhood obsessed with comics and movies, projected herself into Marty. is not it.

Eventually, the project came up with the concept of depicting ``the history of a family'' across two eras. The family is not special, but must represent the average American citizen. As a result, "Hill Valley" also became a microcosm of American society. The contradictory place name, which combines the words "hill" and "valley", is a bit of a joke, but it is also a perfect place name to represent a place that could be found anywhere, embodying the image of the United States.
