Recreate World War I with thoroughly realistic sets

Although it narrowly lost out to Parasite (2019) in the Academy Award for Best Picture, it won the Golden Globe Award for Best Picture (Drama), the PGA (Producers Guild of America Award), and the DGA (Directors Guild of America Award). won the highest award. ``1917'' is undoubtedly one of the representative films of 2019. What was it about this work that depicts the battlefields of World War I with an unusual level of realism and immersion that made it so highly acclaimed? There are many reasons for this, but the biggest point is that while the battlefield at the time, when communication methods were not yet developed, was shown in "analog" footage, the latest technology was also used to create the entire film in one cut. Dew.

The challenge from an analog perspective was to create a set that included the main character's difficult journey to fulfill his mission as a messenger on the battlefield, and the background behind it. The trenches that appear several times, mainly in the opening scene, span a total distance of 1 mile (1.6 km). The trenches, whose walls are slanted at a 15-degree angle, were not only dug into the ground, but also had pillars installed to prevent them from collapsing, and a variety of materials such as plaster, iron plates, and sandbags were piled on top. Furthermore, it was given an aging treatment to make it look like it had been used.

There is a scene in the middle of the movie where a huge flame is depicted, and for this purpose a five-story lighting turret was built and 2,000 tungsten light sources were installed. This is one of the largest lighting sets in movie history. Visual effects were added in post-production to complete the Inferno flames.

Roger Deakins, who won his second Academy Award for Best Cinematography for this film, had his assistant hold the camera and remotely control it from a distance in a small van. The operator attaches the camera to a wire and moves it smoothly, then removes it from the wire while still rotating the camera, climbs into the jeep hand-held, and then gets out of the jeep and drives while holding the camera...this is an impossible task. Photography was also carried out.

Ari, a camera company that Deakins is close friends with, has developed a small camera called the Alexa Mini LF. This is the first time it has been used in this work, making this flexible method possible. He succeeded in the unprecedented challenge of completing a war movie in what appears to be a single cut.
