Deeper depth with the actors' realistic performances
Furthermore, Los Angeles is also famous for numerous cases of police corruption. In addition to the discriminatory violence mentioned above, there have been a continuous number of crimes involving bribery and abuse of power. This film also features corrupt detectives who assault suspects in custody out of personal grudges and sell police information to gangs. The protagonists of this film are the detectives who are determined to exercise justice. However, perhaps it is the bad guys mentioned above that represent the essence of the film.
Although their roles are not large, the "small-time thugs" who appeared in this film, such as Richard "Dick" Stensland and Leland "Buzz" Meeks, could be considered the hidden protagonists who symbolize police corruption. In addition, there are also villains with wealth and power, such as Pierce Patchett (David Strathairn), who runs a brothel, and District Attorney Ellis (Ron Rifkin), who is arrogant and hateful. Please pay attention to the depth of each villain.
But the performance that deserves the most praise is Kim Basinger. She plays Lynn Bracken, a high-class prostitute who looks just like Veronica Lake, the actress who played the femme fatale in film noir films such as " I Need a Gun " (1942). And Lynn is tasked with the role of the femme fatale in this film.

Femme fatale is a French word that originally means "destined woman," but it also refers to the mysterious and seductive women who appear in noir films like this one. The protagonist is attracted to the femme fatale and is drawn into the mystery.
In the original story, Lynn was plastically altered to look like Veronica Lake, but in the movie, it was softened and changed to "she was originally similar". And Basinger herself can be said to have beautifully traced the dark atmosphere of Veronica Lake. Bud, played by Russell Crowe, who made a big leap as an actor in this film, meets Lynn while investigating the Night Owl case, and is attracted to her charm as per the theory of noir.
As mentioned above, Bud hates men who hurt women more than anything else. This is due to his family environment in his childhood. However, he loves Lynn so much that he becomes violent towards her out of jealousy. Russell Crowe's performance at this point shows a complex mix of emotions, including the horror of what he has done impulsively, the loathing he feels for having done the same thing as his father, whom he hates the most, and the remorse he feels towards Lynn.
Basinger's performance, which received such a wonderful performance, is also overwhelming. Lynn knows that Bud hates violence against women more than anything else. She feels deep sadness that she has hurt his heart so much, more than the danger and pain for herself, and she feels both sympathy for Bud and despair for her own situation.
Of course, the violent acts depicted here are not something to be condoned, but at the same time, they are an expression of the extreme love between two people who cannot help it. After this, Bud fights for his life and receives the consequences for his violence in order to maintain the morality of the story.
A miraculous work in which every element exceeds the standard.
