What is exchanged between men is JINGI

So what was it that led this work to its ``overwhelming presence''? A clever plot, clever dialogue, unique characters, violence, and exquisite music. All of these are essential factors. However, there is a spirit that runs through all of this, flowing through the film like blood.

Let's find out the true nature of this from Tarantino's statements. He says that he was once asked an unbelievable question during an interview. The question is, "Why did Orange reveal his true identity at the end?" Indeed, at the end of the movie, Orange, covered in blood, reveals his true identity to White, who supports him. White can't help but cry out in agony when he hears this. He points a gun at Orange's face. The police step in. Gunshots ring out... At this time, if Orange had kept his secret, he could have saved himself. But he didn't. Perhaps because of the strong bond that has developed between him and White, he can no longer hold back at the very end and reveals his true identity.

According to Tarantino, there aren't enough words in the English language to fully describe the psychology of the two men at that moment. But "Japanese does have it," he says. That is "JINGI". He has been baptized by many works, including Japanese yakuza films, for some time, and has been captivated by them, and has sincerely respected the spirit they foster. A particularly strong influence can be seen in director Kinji Fukasaku's `` Battle Without Honor '' series.

“Battle without humanity” preview

It all started in the black market of Kure after the war. This is a story about young people who have returned from war and pour their glistening blood into a world of violence, leading to a conflict without justice. There are rules of this world, or a way of life, that only yakuza people understand. If two people have exchanged a cup or a vow of brotherhood, their fate will be the same. The enemies of your friends are also your enemies. There are times when you have to kill someone despite your own feelings, and even times when you have to jump in prepared to die in order to take revenge.

If you look at the first film, ``Battle Without Honor,'' which was released in 1973, there is also the blood bond between Bunta Sugawara and Tatsuo Umemiya, who are bonded in prison in the early stages, and the boss (Nobuo Kaneko) telling his henchmen. There is also the family situation of the Yamamori-gumi, who use their hands and push them around. Furthermore, despite their tense relationship, the relationship between Bunta Sugawara and Hiroki Matsukata, who understand each other's feelings, leaves a unique flavor. Even though they know that there is no turning back, they do not take each other's lives, but instead speak openly and honestly to each other.

Arguments, betrayal, and deception. As the title suggests, there are many instances of punishments that are ``without humanity'', but there are also lives like Bunta Sugawara, who is dripping with sweat and desperately trying to live up to humanity. The charm of this work is the way these people, both existing and unseen, collide and compete with each other, risking their lives. I'm sure the young Tarantino looked up to this film as if it were a textbook, learning by imitating the foreign culture of ``benevolence.''

Tarantino has his own interpretation of ``benevolence.'' "It doesn't go beyond what we call humanity in English, but it goes beyond respect. It's something a person must do, even if it's unwillingly. Orange confessing his secret to White. Everything that White did in the next 60 seconds was an act of honor."
