James B. Harris and Stanley Kubrick's fateful encounter

Stanley Kubrick's memorable Hollywood debut was ``PUT YOUR BODY IN CASH'' (1956). ``Hare your body to the fullest''. The original title is "The Killing". It's a double meaning that includes the meaning of ``making a lot of money'' in addition to ``killing'', which is cool in its own right, but I take my hat off to the sense of humor that made it into such a Japanese title.

The original story is `` Flight and Death '' by Lionel White. This is a crime story about five men who hatch a plan to rob a racetrack of $2 million in cash, which ends in tragedy. The person who acquired the film rights for the cheap price of $10,000 was James B. Harris. He is the son of the owner of Flamingo Films, a film and television distribution company, and even has a history of attending the Juilliard School to become a musician. For some reason, he decided to follow the same path as his father as a producer, and was thinking of selling the film rights to ``Running and Death'', which he had acquired at a bargain price, to Frank Sinatra (he also worked on this original work). ).

However, he ended up producing the film himself. Through a mutual acquaintance, Harris had a fateful encounter with Stanley Kubrick.

``Alex Singer was a childhood friend of Stanley Kubrick, and he introduced me to him. After I retired from the Army, I met Stanley again and invited him to a preview of his latest film, `` The Trap of Ruth. '' He had previously directed `` Fear and Desire, '' and I was very impressed with Stanley's work.''

(Excerpt from interview with James B. Harris)

At the time, Kubrick was still an amateur filmmaker, earning a living by playing chess. However, Harris was truly in awe of the immense talent of a young man his age. The two hit it off and decided to establish ``Harris Kubrick Productions'' and make a concerted effort to break into the film industry. His memorable first work was ``PUT YOUR BODY IN CASH''.
