The scenario-altering incident that infuriated William Goldman

Goldman's first draft was also challenged by the original authors, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. Bernstein offered to write the script himself and began developing the scenario on his own. Bernstein's girlfriend at the time, Nora Ephron, a New York Post reporter, also participated in the process.

Speaking of Nora Ephron, she later became a screenwriter and wrote the scenario for `` When Harry Met Sally... '' (1989), and as a film director she directed `` When I Sleepless in Seattle '' (1993) and `` You've Got Mail '' (1998). A person who has worked on it. She's a master of romantic comedies, and she clearly doesn't mesh well with hard-core political suspense. In fact, the script they wrote was littered with gags and jokes, and even included scenes that put motion on the women they were interviewing. The remnants of this can be seen in the scene where Bernstein interviews a woman who works in Colson's office, special advisor to the president, and says, ``She's really beautiful.''

William Goldman is called to a meeting with Robert Redford, Bob Woodward, and Carl Bernstein and is stunned by the shocking truth. The scenario that I poured my heart and soul into had been rewritten without my permission! ? Goldman flatly rejects the new script and leaves the room.

Woodward was actually dissatisfied with the Bernstein and Nora Ephron version. Woodward was portrayed as a naive amateur reporter who admired Bernstein. Woodward later called Goldman to apologize, saying, "One of the worst things in my life was letting them [Bernstein and Nora Ephron] write it."

Robert Redford and Alan J. Pakula also worked hard to improve the scenario, and after many twists and turns, ``All the All the President's Men'' managed to pass the final draft. It's finally time to start filming.
