"Pentagon Papers/Top Secret Documents" synopsis

In 1971, the Vietnam War reached a quagmire, and anti-war sentiment was growing in the United States. The Department of Defense had created documents to objectively investigate and analyze the Vietnam War, but as the war dragged on, the number of documents had ballooned to 7,000 documents. One day, the document was leaked and the New York Times scooped some of its contents. Beaten by rival paper the New York Times, Katharine Graham, the head of the Washington Post and the first female publisher in the history of a major American newspaper, and editor-in-chief Ben Bradlee independently obtained the remaining documents and published the entire story. I am working hard to make it public. They were driven by a desire to tell The Truth. However, it was clear that President Nixon would use any means necessary to suppress the article. Should he really write an article about making the government his enemy? The time to make a decision that puts freedom of the press and beliefs on the line is drawing near.

Social drama filmed between sci-fi blockbusters

Steven Spielberg's latest film, The Pentagon Papers, is a true-life drama that celebrates the freedom of the press and the noble spirit of journalism. In 1971, the New York Times gained access to classified documents related to the Vietnam War. However, the government alleges that it violates national security laws and, through the Justice Department, applies pressure to stop distributing the newspaper. Meanwhile, the Washington Post has obtained copies of the confidential documents and, overriding the opinions of lawyers and investors, moves to publish them in its paper. The battle between the female publisher (Meryl Streep) and the editor-in-chief (Tom Hanks) over whether or not the film should take that risk makes the story even more thrilling.

In addition to the drama and Arrival it conveys, the most surprising thing about this movie is its production schedule. Surprisingly, ``Pentagon Papers'' was completed in between working on Spielberg's next film, `` Ready Player One, '' which was about to be released. Spielberg began main unit filming for The Pentagon Papers on May 30, 2017, during the production period for Ready Player One, and completed it in just 50 days. It is scheduled to be released in December of the same year (Japanese release will be on March 30th of the following year). It took only 9 months from writing the script to finishing it. This is an exceptionally fast production time for a Hollywood commercial film, which takes an average of 14 months to produce.

“ Ready Player One” trailer

Spielberg hastened to make this film because of the timeliness of the subject matter, saying, ``[The film's story] has something in common with the current state of the American news media.'' However, due to the tight production schedule, it was not possible to make it this far. Since it is finished with a high quality product, I have to say that its existence is once again terrifying.
